All October: Sponsor a Family Gift Card Drive

This upcoming holiday season, 100 families will be taking shelter in MSP’s community housing programs. We want to give each family the opportunity to celebrate the holidays in a way that is meaningful for them. We are seeking your help in purchasing gift cards for families, which allows parents to pick out their own gifts for their children and provides empowerment and agency during a difficult time.

    Please consider sponsoring a family.

    Domestic Violence Awareness Month 2025

Each October, communities across the country come together to recognize Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM). At My Sister’s Place (MSP), DVAM is a time to honor survivors, raise awareness about the realities of domestic violence, and engage our community in meaningful action.

This year, MSP will host a series of events throughout October to bring together survivors, advocates, donors, and partners in building a safer future for families across DC. From awareness campaigns to community activities, every event offers an opportunity to learn, connect, and show support.

All Month Long: Sponsor a Family Gift Card Drive

As part of DVAM, we invite you to participate in our Sponsor a Family Gift Card Drive. By contributing gift cards, you help empower parents in our programs to choose meaningful gifts for their children, giving families dignity and joy during difficult times.

    Why DVAM Matters

Domestic violence impacts 1 in 4 women and 1 in 9 men in their lifetimes. Survivors in our community face barriers to safety, housing, and healing every day. DVAM is a chance for all of us—neighbors, friends, family members, and community partners—to take a stand against violence and show that survivors are not alone.

    How You Can Get Involved

-Attend one of our public events throughout October.

-Contribute to the Sponsor a Family Gift Card Drive.

-Share our resources and events with your networks to help raise awareness.

    Join Us

We invite you to stand with survivors and take action this October. Together, we can create safer futures for families across DC.

What Is Paint the Town Purple?

Paint the Town Purple is an annual DVAM (Domestic Violence Awareness Month) tradition where advocates, volunteers, and community members gather at metro stations across DC to hand out resources, spark conversations, and chalk messages of hope and healing for survivors. It’s a powerful way to spread love, raise awareness, and show survivors they are not alone.

    What to Expect

    • Free giveaways and outreach materials

    • Chalk art and messages of support on the sidewalks

    • Staff and volunteers sharing helpful information and resources
