At My Sister’s Place (MSP), we believe that education saves lives. For over 45 years, we’ve not only sheltered and supported survivors, but also worked to build a stronger, more informed community. Knowledge empowers survivors to make informed decisions, equips allies to take action, and drives cultural change across the District.

Why Education Matters

Domestic violence thrives in silence. By raising awareness, sharing resources, and starting conversations, MSP helps break the stigma and build understanding. Our outreach and education efforts extend beyond our doors to schools, workplaces, community groups, and faith organizations, ensuring more people know how to recognize abuse and respond with compassion.

How We Educate the Community

Community Trainings & Workshops

We provide training for students, educators, employers, faith leaders, and service providers on topics such as:

  • Recognizing warning signs of abuse
  • Building healthy relationships
  • Supporting survivors in trauma-informed ways
  • Responding safely and effectively to disclosures

Partnerships for Prevention

MSP partners with leaders such as the DC Coalition Against Domestic Violence (DCCADV) and the One Love Foundation to strengthen prevention efforts throughout the city. Together, we create a coordinated community response that puts survivors first.

Awareness Campaigns

Each year during Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM) and throughout the year, we engage the community through events, panels, and campaigns that spark dialogue, honor survivors, and inspire action.

Financial Literacy & Empowerment

Financial abuse occurs in nearly every abusive relationship and is one of the biggest barriers to leaving an unsafe situation. That’s why MSP makes financial literacy a core part of our education work.

Through workshops, one-on-one coaching, and partnerships with local banks and financial experts, survivors learn how to:

  • Budget and manage daily expenses
  • Build or repair credit
  • Open safe accounts
  • Plan for long-term goals
  • Protect themselves from financial exploitation

By providing these tools, we help survivors gain the confidence and independence they need to create safe, stable futures for themselves and their families.
