My
Sister's Place is an interactive community committed to eradicating
domestic violence. We provide safe, confidential shelter; programs,
education and advocacy for battered women and their children. Our
goal is to empower women to take control of their lives.
My
Sister's Place has been providing services to battered women and
their children since 1979. We are committed to assisting women in
acquiring the information, resources, and skills to end the cycle
of violence and abuse in their lives; and to achieve self-confidence,
self-reliance, and independence. We work in partnership with community-based
programs and organizations to provide our services.
My
Sister's Place staff, board of directors, and volunteers work together
to provide an array of services and opportunities for the battered
women and children that we serve. In order to provide our unique
and comprehensive services delivery system, we combine life experience;
professional skill and expertise; knowledge and familiarity with
the dynamics of abuse in women's lives; and a belief in the healing
power of sisterhood.
The
program and services we offer include:
-
Shelter/Transitional Housing
For many families, this is the first peaceful, secure environment
that they have been in a long time. We provide a comfortable
home environment, with both private and communal living spaces.
The daily tasks of household maintenance, such as cooking and
cleaning, are shared by the women on a cooperative basis.
Transitional housing is provided for women who are no longer
in need of the security that accompanies a confidential shelter,
but are not yet ready to live on their own. When a woman moves
with her family into the transitional program, she is taking
a big step toward independence and self-sufficiency by working
or attending regular classes or job training, enrolling her
children in school or daycare, and budgeting expenses.
-
Children's
Program
Children at the shelter benefit from a peaceful environment
and participate in support groups as well as a variety of educational
and recreational activities. The physical, mental, and emotional
health and well-being of children at the shelter is of primary
importance. My Sister's Place employs a full-time Children's Therapist
and maintains close working relationships with a tight network
of agencies and organizations serving children and their families
throughout the community.
-
Community
Education
One of the keys to eradicating domestic violence is through
knowledge and education. We participate on panels, provide training
and make presentations to a variety of organizations in the
community. One way we fulfill this is through our Speaker's
Bureau, which consists of highly trained volunteers and staff.
-
Volunteers
My Sister's Place volunteers are vital to our existence. We
have a dedicated roster of individuals who contribute many talents
to our various programs.
-
My Sister's Place Counseling
Center
Women and children who have lived in violent homes often need
supportive counseling to help them recover from the trauma of
the abuse they have endured. My Sister's Place Counseling
Center provides access to this counseling for women and children
in all stages recovering from abuse, including those who remain
in potentially violent homes, those who have escaped to shelter,
and those who have separated permanently but want access to
ongoing support.
