Volunteers are the heart and soul of My Sister's Place. Without the dedication of more than 100 volunteers, we could not achieve our goal of assisting victims of domestic violence. Our faithful and committed volunteers make a profound difference in the lives of our clients everyday. Volunteers donate their time and talents to our hotline, children's program, community outreach and education activities, and administrative initiatives. All volunteers must complete a 40 hour comprehensive training on domestic violence prior to beginning service with My Sister's Place. Training sessions are generally held quarterly. For more information on volunteering with My Sister's Place, please contact our volunteer coordinator at volunteer@mysistersplacedc.org or download a volunteer application here.
Hotline Volunteers
Respond to crisis calls on MSP's 24-hour hotline and assist emergency shelter residents with daily tasks. My Sister's Place receives about ten crisis calls per day. Shifts are available 24 hours per day, 7 days per week. Volunteers must commit to a minimum of 4 two-hour shifts each month.
Children's Program Volunteers
Help children recover from the trauma of abuse through Children's Group Therapy Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7:00 pm to 8:30 pm at the emergency shelter. Children who have experienced violence benefit from therapeutic intervention such as play therapy and from positive role models like you. Assist with Movie Mondays at the Emergency Services Center to provide homeless children with the fun all children deserve. Become a mentor or a tutor to a child living in one of our residential programs and have a positive impact on a child in need.
Community Outreach and Education Volunteers
Join our Speaker's Bureau to educate the community about domestic violence and become part of the solution to this pressing public health issue. Participate in technical assistance trainings that equip first line responders (like the police and health care workers) with the tools to identify and appropriately respond to victims of domestic violence.
Administrative Volunteers
Assist My Sister's Place in designing public relations materials, maintaining our website, fundraising, and planning special events. Internships are also available.
