Domestic Violence is a community issue, because the community -
not just the individual victim - suffers from its costs. Previous
studies have estimated the annual cost of domestic violence in the
United States to be anywhere from $10 billion to $67 billion (Zuckerman
and Friedman, 1998). A study in Chicago estimated that an average
charge for medical services to abused women, children, and older
people is $1,633 per person per year (Meyer, 1992). U.S. businesses
lose an estimated $3 to $5 billion annually through employee absenteeism
from work due to domestic violence (Bureau of National Affairs,
1994).
The costs of domestic violence are shared by everyone in the community. But as a community, we can end it. You can be a part of My Sister's Place in so many different ways. Our volunteers are vital to our existence! Your talents can be put to use in any area of our Volunteer Program. Volunteers receive training in specific areas of service.
