For more than 20 years, the Fannie Mae Help the Homeless Program has brought together caring and committed individuals to work toward preventing and ending homelessness in our region. This year, it is estimated that there are nearly 12,000 people in the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area who are homeless. In 2005, 6.1 percent of the total number of homeless individuals and 55 percent of homeless families in the District of Columbia were homeless due to domestic violence. As the housing market continues to change, average rent prices increase, and low-income housing slowly eliminated in the District of Columbia, the challenges for battered women and their children will be compounded by their inability to afford permanent housing. Together, we can help solve this issue. Visit www.helpthehomelessdc.org for more information, to register for the walk or to make a donation to support homeless, indigent battered women and their children.
| Help the Homeless Mini-Walk Benefits My Sister’s Place | ||
My Sister’s Place, Inc. partnered with Peabody Elementary School for the annual 2008 Mini-Walk that took place on November 7, as part of the Fannie Mae |
Foundation’s big
Help the Homeless fundraising
event. Together, MSP and Peabody
School staff coordinated
and participated in the miniwalk.
MSP Case Managers
Heather Sauer and Laura Covington
gave a safety talk to almost
100 children, several
teachers and the school’s principle.
Several MSP staff also participated
in the mini-walk that
took place in the park across the street from the school. Participants |
chanted “help, help, help
the homeless” as they walked
single file around the entire
park. All proceeds raised at this
event benefited the women and
children of My Sister’s Place.
